The role of major psoas muscle

We want to point out two things when people have back pain.

One has been caused by poor posture and the other one is due to the vulnerability of muscles which are stabilizing the vertebrae.
However, we may add one more here.

That is the muscle called 'psoas major'. Why should we draw our attention to this muscle, which has not been familiar to those who do exercise to strengthen their back muscles?

Unlike the uneven outer muscles, psoas major is an inner muscle.
It helps the leg to be lifted and keep one's posture stabilized. When running a race, it helps to lengthen one's stride, so psoas major must be strengthened to speed up in the race. On the other hand, one may drag shoes or walk with short stride if psoas major is being degenerated.
This means that it must be strengthened continuously when you get old.

If so, why psoas major can cause instability of spine or is the cause of back pain? If you look at the anatomic structure, you will understand.
Psoas major, as a long and strong muscle, originates at the spine and is connected to the thighbone through one's side and pelvis. It links one's upper body with lower body and helps the legs to be lifted and straightened as well as bending it over.

What will happen if psoas major is being shortened or indurated? Stiff psoas major pulls the spine continuously and it results in a back pain. Additionally, the muscles on the opposite side get stiffed as well. Due to the unbalance of muscles, the body is suffering contortion and pain appears around the back, waist, pelvis caused by indurated muscles.

If so, why is psoas major becoming shortened or indurated?
When you bend down the body, psoas major contracts and it straightens as you erect yourself.
If you bend your knees to go up the stairs, it contracts and it straightens as you stretch the leg. However, if you bend down the body or keep your posture unstabilized for long hours, psoas major begins to indurate.

Rice planting, weeding, mopping and squatting to work are thought to result in making psoas major shortening. If you feel that hip joint is not straightened instantly, when you stand up all of a sudden after the long drive or sitting for a long time, the shortening and induration of psoas major is in an advanced stage.

On the contrary, the posture to stretch out two legs is not good for one's health as well as because psoas major begins to shorten and indurate if you keep this posture for a long time.

If you sit with your legs crossed, it may be a cause of the imbalance of body that a part of psoas major contracts while the other side is relaxed.
Hence, pelvis and tailbone may be contorted. For women, inside the womb is congested with blood and it may result in menstrual irregularity or infertility.

The best solution is to enjoy a long walk. Enjoy a long walk with the feet slightly raised. Walk up the stairs, taking two steps at a time, to strength your psoas major. You can do the exercise on the spot.

Put your hands against the wall and raise your legs along the wall. Raise your leg alternately as if lizard creeps up the wall. Raise a leg and keep it remained for 5-10 seconds, then press the wall gently with a knee. This type of lizard exercise is particularly effective for the patient of sciatic neuralgia.
